The MMO genre was born and raised in the PC culture. The reasons are obvious, of course — personal computers have been connected to networks for a long time, the keyboard was more effective for communication before the advent of Voice-over-IP. That said, a lot has been done to make platforms like the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 more attractive for MMO developers and players.
Funcom plans to release Age of Conan for the 360. DC Universe Online, The Agency, and Free Realms will all be available on the PS3. In fact, noted MMO developer SOE was not long ago moved into what is basically Sony’s PlayStation division with the explicit intent to focus on console MMOs. Blizzard has hired workers with console experience to work on its unannounced “Next-Gen MMO.” Clearly, this generation is going to greatly expand on the pioneering efforts of past console MMOs like Final Fantasy XI. Surely if the genre doesn’t explode on today’s consoles it will in the next batch, right?

Are you looking forward to leaving behind the mouse and keyboard so you can lounge on the sofa with a wireless controller, or are you concerned that too much will be lost in translation? Maybe you think that attempts like The Agency will fail, and the bubble will burst before anyone even really notices it. There are a lot of problems, such as the expense and hassle of the process of authenticating patches in a tightly-controlled service like Xbox Live. Are problems like that deal breakers?

It took a while getting there, but PvP gear finally made it to Age of Conan. Was it worth the wait? Apparently, yes. The PvP patch has caused a marked increase in enthusiasm for the game, and players are killing each other like never before in their haste to earn PvP levels. Unfortunately, the AoC PvP notoriety patch didn’t go live yet, so nobody is being branded as a murderer or criminal no matter how many lower level passers-by they ambush and massacre.
Martuk at Ten Ton Hammer has put together the first part of an exhaustive catalog of all the PvP gear that’s made it into the game so far, complete with requirements and bonuses, so you can plan out exactly what you want to wear in your PvP career. You can pick the gear up from vendors, who you can find in the game’s racial hubs. Each piece has a minimum PvP level required to wear or wield. Note that the minimum character level is 80; this is definitely endgame stuff.
Although there are ten PvP levels, the gear available only goes up to level 5 so far. More gear will be coming in the future to take the system all the way up to level 10.

Change is under way for “Age of Conan,” and players will like it, a Funcom rep told Multiplayer.

On Wednesday, Funcom announced in their official forums that producer/game director of “Age of Conan” Gaute Godager (pictured) has parted ways with the company. Godager was with Funcom for 16 years, and was one of the original founders of the company.

MTV Multiplayer contacted Funcom product manager Jørgen Tharaldsen about Godager’s sudden departure and how this will affect the game.

Here’s what Tharaldsen had to say via e-mail:

Tharaldsen: Besides losing a good workmate and friend here at the Oslo studio of Funcom, I think that the fact that Gaute leaves means that we get a direction which is more player-centric, since [new game director Craig Morrison] is so good at being hands-on with the communities at all times. As we are now in a live phase with “Conan” that is really the only goal, you know, making sure our players are happy and have fun. “As we are now in a live phase with ‘Conan’ that is really the only goal… making sure our players are happy and have fun.”

Craig Morrison, the new game director, has worked on both community management here in Funcom and as a game director on “Anarchy Online,” so he brings a very unique experience to the role (and he is great guy too). So while Gaute’s decision to leave is something which will lead the game in new directions, I feel certain that the players will notice a great vision for the game going forward as well. We have seen but the start of the evolution of “Age of Conan,” and out of all the people in Funcom, I can’t think of anyone which could do it better than Craig.

Still, and I think this is important to mention too, Gaute was one of the founders of Funcom and has been one of the luminaries of the MMO world. The MMO genre would not have been the same without him (i.e. this was the man which got instancing into MMO games for the first time, or the action combat system in “Conan,” and many, many other smaller and bigger things). I can’t count how many MMO developers I have met through the years who were inspired by things Gaute and the team around him got into the genre, and as of such we also lose something. He has surely done some great things, and as he now embarks on a new career outside Funcom it’s also in place to give a big thank you for all his contributions.

Now that Craig Morrison is ensconced as the new director and producer for Age of Conan and Anarchy Online, he has spoken on the official forums as “Silirrion”. Check out his first foray into the madness below.

Greetings Hyborian adventurers!

It is a great honor to be here and to have been asked to step into this role. It’s definitely a little strange to be back here on the forums after having been involved in starting up the original Age of Conan community over three years ago (and a big hello again to those of you who have been around since those early days!). I have been very excited to see how the game and the community around it have developed since then and I am thrilled to have this chance to guide and support your adventures in the world our team here has crafted and built with such hard work and dedication.

I am really looking forward to being able to help us continue to immerse you in the Hyborian age and continue to improve your game experience.

Obviously, so soon after the launch, there are many things that you all want to hear about. I can assure you that the team are busily working away preparing great new content and looking at the areas of the game that the community have highlighted as being important to them.

As well as working to complete the coming content updates (In the shape of the upcoming PVP updates, Ymir’s pass and new level 80 dungeons amongst other things) we are also now working hard on the games items and gem systems, and how the budgets for character statistics can be refined and improved as one of our main focuses for the next few months. We are also working on ensuring that the trade-skill system is developed further.

We will bring you more details on these things over the coming weeks as we move them from internal development to the test server, so you can be sure that there is plenty of development to come.

Those of you that know me from Anarchy Online will hopefully know this already, but for those that don’t, I hope you will find over the coming weeks, months and years that community is a very important part of the development process for me. It’s where I came from. I do read the forums each and every day and we will be trying to take a more active role in the community itself, both here on the live forums and on the test forums.

I, like all of you out there, started out as a fan of MMOs first and foremost. I’ve been playing, writing about them and working on them for over a decade now. It’s been a strange combination of hard work, luck and the support of many talented people on our teams that has brought me here today speaking to you all. At heart though I will always be a gamer and I am really looking forward to the opportunity to keep you all enthralled in the world of Conan.

By a startling coincidence that probably has something to do with a planetary alignment in Capricorn or some such, the first big PvP patch went to the Age of Conan servers at about the same time a certain other game was gearing up for final launch. We have no idea how or why this could possibly have happened, and are frankly amazed at the synchronicity.

At any rate, the players have been getting busy killing each other; there are even reports that some servers are now ‘booming’. We’re seeing quotes like ‘This is the most fun I have ever had on AoC.’ Of course, we’re also seeing posts that report tumbleweeds and lone and level sands stretching far away.
In the midst of this exuberance, one group decided to get technical and work out what the hard facts of the new system actually were. Drocmar and his associates have put together a nice, solid, informative post explaining how PvP XP works. He’s explained the diminishing returns, who gets what for killing who, and how much PvP XP you’ll need to ding first level. There had been some numbers available before on the Testlive forums, but as any tester knows, what appears there isn’t necessarily going to appear on Live. Players helping players: that’s what we like to see. As well as players decapitating players.

PvP leveling is now a part of Age of Conan thanks to today’s update. It is the first of a series of updates to the entire PvP system in the game. Check out what else changed today below.

With todays update the first step of the PvP System Update has been introduced to the Age of Conan live servers. Read here what exactly this includes and what future updates have in store.

PVP levels and statistics

This update now activates the PVP leveling system. You can now gain PVP levels by engaging in your normal PVP activities, be it world PVP, siege encounters or defeating your foes in the PVP mini-games. There are ten PVP levels in total that you can work through to prove your worth on the battlefield.

Your PVP stats are now also active in your character tab, keeping track of your performance in PVP.

In addition your new PVP armor ratings come into play now that the system is active. These provide additional mitigation of damage against damage that comes from other players. The new PVP armors will be the primary means of raising these ratings, although we will look to add additional means of raising these PVP defensive ratings in the future.

Diminishing Returns

Diminishing returns have also been set on PVP XP. This means that you receive less and less of a benefit from killing the same person in quick succession. This is an area that we will most likely continue to tweak and adjust over time. It is the type of feature that will require some additional feedback from the live servers to get exactly right. For the launch we have tried to set it a little conservatively to ensure that it isn’t abused or exploited. That doesn’t mean though that we aren’t open to adjusting it further in the future once we see how people progress with the current system in place.

New Armories and PVP rewards

So other than the obligatory bragging rights what will the new PVP levels provide? That’s where the new PVP specific gear comes in. Each class has a special new set of blue armor for PVP levels one to five

You will be able to visit new armory locations in all the racial hubs, these special shops stock new PVP based items for players to access. Vendors in the armories will stock you up with great new items starting as low as level twenty, as you progress through your normal levels and the PVP levels then you will find more and more accessories and armor and finally weapons that you can purchase in the armory.

Different vendors appear in the armory as you level up so be sure to check back as you progress.

PVP gear will come in all shapes and sizes. At level eighty there are new blue armor sets that are class specific, while for those not yet at the maximum level you can find an armor set for each of the armor types with upgrades available as you level up. Maximum level players will also get access to a great new set of blue weapons.

All of the PVP items introduced in this update reward players for levels one through five in the PVP progression system. New epic items that serve levels six through ten will be introduced in coming updates, and on the subject of coming updates…

Future Updates

This update is just the start of the planned PVP updates. Next up will come the PVP consequence (or Notoriety) system. Now we had hoped to include both at the same time, however the consequence system needed some extra work to be fully realized. Since we took the decision to support the idea of players being ‘notorious’ in PVP and including consequences for their actions we felt it was important to ensure we did it properly. We saw from the feedback on the test server that we needed to make sure there are more than just penalties to notoriety system when it arrives and want to take a little extra time to account for as many of the scenarios as possible so that the PVP game-play itself isn’t diminished on the servers.

Keep your eyes peeled for more information on this over the next few weeks as we get closer to rolling out the second part of the PVP update to the test server.

Also, as mentioned above, you will see more PVP items added to the game in the form of the rewards for the PVP levels six through ten. These class specific epic armor sets will also have great new visuals and be a prestigious reward for those who battle up the PVP levels.

Some big shake-ups seem to be happening over at Funcom today as Gaute Godager resigns from his position at the company as producer and game director for Age of Conan. His replacement is Craig Morrison, who’s held the same position with Anarchy Online for several years prior to this change. While most (or more than half) will agree that Age of Conan is in a very dissatisfying state, this news still comes as a shock. Gaute Godager was one of the founders of Funcom and is leaving the company and the games industry after 16 years. He was also a part of Age of Conan’s development since its conception. On his reason for leaving Godager said, “I have done my very best making this fabulous game, but I have concluded there are elements which I am dissatisfied with. I have decided to act on this, and as a result I have chosen to leave Funcom. It is time to get new, fresh eyes on Age of Conan, and I wholeheartedly support the appointment of Craig. I have had a fantastic time these last 16 years, and I am very proud of the many things Funcom has achieved. Funcom and Conan will always be a big part of me, but as I now look to new ventures outside the gaming industry I am certain Age of Conan’s future is in the best of hands.” We can’t be certain whether Gaute truly left of his own accord or was kindly asked to step down, but either way this is a big change for everyone involved with the game. The bright side to this whole thing is that it could mean good things for continuing AoC subscribers. Maybe Gaute is right in his assessment that the game needs a fresh set of eyes. Although with the launch of Warhammer Online tomorrow and upcoming Wrath of the Lich King expansion in November things could get even more stormy for the Barbarian MMO. We would suggest readers buy a drama-proof raincoat for the coming months, just in case.

A few weeks ago, we pointed the Massively readers to an article entitled Age of Conan: A post mortem analysis, written by the Daedren over at r1ftgaming. In that lengthy article, Daedren gave his top reasons for AoC’s demise, and even offered it as a lesson learned for future developers. Comments on his site, and here at Massively were quite heated concerning players’ malcontent with Age of Conan .

Since then, Daedren was able to grab the attention of Funcom, and hence an interview with Product Manager Erling Ellingsen. In true Daedren style, he doesn’t beat around the bush and asks the questions plaguing the minds of most former and current AoC subscribers. Where is this PvP system we’ve heard so much about? Why announce a new expansion when the current game still needs so much work?

In addition, Daedren offers his readers the opportunity to submit their own questions for Funcom, and their responses to the answers given by Erlingsen in this interview. As he says himself, if Funcom hasn’t filed a restraining order on him after this last interview, he’ll try for another Q&A session in a few weeks.

Even if you don’t agree with Daedren’s opinion or stance on AoC, it’s still good to see that developers aren’t afraid to own up to the community and face the more opinionated interviews. Even if the answers they give are a bit on the cookie-cutter side.

Better late than never? The graphically intense, atmospheric slashfest Age of Conan has had designated roleplaying servers since day one, but it doesn’t seem to have occurred to Funcom to give that status any kind of binding definition, let alone a formal code of conduct. Now, though, the exhaustive rules for what you can and can’t do on a roleplay server have been laid out.

They’re pretty much what you would expect from AoC. All names except those that gel with the Hyborian background are prohibited, so there will be no more StoneColdKillah or DARTH CONAN types running around. Some channels are content restricted.

There’s also a general injunction: ‘Do not break the RP of other players. That includes harassing them by jumping around constantly, disturbing RP events or sessions etc.’

We’re not at all sure how exactly this is meant to be implemented on RP-PvP servers. Are you not allowed to hack the head off the Aquilonian dog who ambushed you yestereve, because he happens to be engaged in an intense in-character poetic recital?

Would in-character weddings be immune to raiding parties intent on slaughtering the groom and carrying off the bride, as occasionally happened in history? Would Conan himself have to sit back and wait for the conspirators to finish roleplaying out their conspiracy to dethrone him before he could split their skulls to the teeth?

Fortunately, Age of Conan GMs have a reputation for being clued-up when it comes to roleplay.
